The Green Chemistry Initiative, founded and led by Dr. Jianmei Cui in the Chemistry Department at Georgia State University, is dedicated to promoting safer and more sustainable approaches to chemistry in education and research. Through education, outreach, and advocacy, the initiative encourages the adoption of the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry in both academic settings and everyday life, helping to reduce waste, conserve resources, and support a healthier, more sustainable future.

Our Impact: From One Idea to One Community
What began as an idea in October 2025 has grown into a university initiative advancing green chemistry through education, research, student leadership, and community engagement.
January 2026: The Green Chemistry Awareness Club was established, building a student community committed to sustainability. By April, the club had grown to 51 members.
March 2026: The Green Chemistry Initiative (GCI) was formally established at Georgia State University to expand green chemistry education, research, and sustainable laboratory practices.
June 2026: Georgia State University formally adopted green chemistry principles into its laboratory safety practices, marking a significant step toward institutionalizing safer and more sustainable chemistry.
Advancing Research and Scholarship
GCI advances green chemistry education through scholarly research and publication, sharing practical approaches to integrating sustainability into undergraduate chemistry education.
Our publications in the Journal of Chemical Education include:
- Small Changes, Big Impact: Integrating Green Chemistry into the Organic Chemistry Laboratory through Optimized Experimental Methods (May 2026).
- Small Changes, Big Impact: Evaluating the Effects of Green Chemistry Integration in an Organic Chemistry Laboratory Course on Students’ Awareness, Perceptions, and Self-Efficacy Regarding Sustainable Practices(October 2026).
These publications share evidence-based approaches to green chemistry education and extend GCI’s impact to the broader chemistry education community
September 23, 2026: GCI hosted its inaugural Green Chemistry Awareness Day, welcoming approximately 340 attendees and 27 student organizations to celebrate sustainable science and collaboration.
September 29, 2026: GCI was invited to the CDC Biosafety and Biosecurity Month Kickoff to showcase how green chemistry principles can support biosafety and safer, more sustainable laboratories.
Looking Ahead: Building a Greener Future
From a single idea to student leadership, scholarly research, institutional change, and community engagement, GCI demonstrates how one vision can inspire meaningful progress. We continue to build partnerships, advance sustainable laboratory practices, and empower the next generation to make chemistry safer for people and the planet.
One idea. One growing community. A lasting impact for a safer, greener future.
Why Green Chemistry Matters
Green chemistry helps prevent pollution at its source by designing safer chemicals and processes. It reduces waste, conserves resources, and protects human health while supporting scientific innovation.
The initiative is guided by the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry, which focus on reducing waste, minimizing the use of hazardous substances, and designing processes that are safer for people and the environment. In simple terms, green chemistry is about preventing problems—like pollution and health risks—before they happen, rather than fixing them afterward.

The initiative also makes chemistry more relevant to non-chemistry majors by connecting these ideas to everyday life. From the products we use at home to the air we breathe, chemistry plays a role in many aspects of daily living. Understanding how safer materials and more efficient processes are developed helps individuals make more informed and environmentally responsible choices.
What We Do
Through updating coursework, greener laboratory practices, certification programs, student organization and outreach events such as Green Chemistry Awareness Day, Earth Day celebration, the initiative encourages participation from students, faculty, and the broader community. By fostering collaboration and awareness, it aims to build a culture of sustainability both within the university and beyond.

Guided by the idea that small changes can make a big impact, the Green Chemistry Initiative empowers people from all backgrounds—not just scientists—to contribute to a healthier and more sustainable future.
