Our Impact

Since launching the Green Chemistry Initiative at Georgia State University in March, 2026, we have been advancing sustainability through interdisciplinary education, research, laboratory safety, student engagement, and community outreach.

Contributed to the integration of green chemistry principles into Georgia State University’s laboratory safety manual in June 2026, helping connect laboratory safety practices with sustainability and responsible chemical management.

Organized Georgia State University’s inaugural GCAD on September 23, 2026, engaging more than 340 students, faculty, staff, & community partners, with participation from 26 student organizations.

Invited to participate in the CDC Bio-safety and Biosecurity Month kickoff in September 29, 2026, extending our outreach beyond the university and highlighting the connections between green chemistry, laboratory safety, and sustainability.

Contributed to peer-reviewed educational research and published 2 peer reviewed articles in the Journal of Chemical Education in May & October, demonstrating how green chemistry principles can be incorporated into undergraduate laboratory education.

Empower our students through leadership training, teamwork, and hands-on experience as they collaborate to plan, organize, and lead GCAD promoting sustainability, communication, and leadership skills.

Provide students with opportunities to present their research, share innovative ideas, and communicate their scientific discoveries while promoting green chemistry and sustainability.

Through these efforts, we are building a collaborative community that connects sustainable scientific, safer laboratory practices, interdisciplinary education, and environmental responsibility to help create a greener future.

2. Green Chemistry Awareness Day September 2027

Building on the success of our inaugural half-day event in 2026, the GCI at Georgia State University plans to expand Green Chemistry Awareness Day 2027 into a full-day program that brings together students, researchers, faculty, industry partners, and community members to advance green chemistry education, research, and sustainable innovation.

The expanded program will highlight the principles of green chemistry, showcase student research, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, and strengthen connections between academia, industry, and the broader community.

Through this expanded program, GCI aims to increase awareness of green chemistry, inspire student engagement, foster meaningful partnerships, and promote the adoption of greener and safer chemical practices.

Planned Activities Include:

  • Keynote Addresses: Featuring perspectives on green chemistry, sustainability, and emerging innovations.
  • Student Research Presentations: Showcasing student projects and research advancing green chemistry and sustainable practices.
  • Interactive Educational Activities: Engaging participants with green chemistry concepts and applications.
  • Green Chemistry Panel Discussion: Exploring current challenges, opportunities, and future directions in green chemistry.
  • Networking and Collaboration: Connecting students, faculty, researchers, industry representatives, and community partners.
  • GCAD Flyer Design Competition: Encouraging creative communication of green chemistry principles and sustainability.
  • GCAD Signature Wall: Inviting participants to express their commitment to green chemistry and a more sustainable future.
  • Lunch and Dinner: Supporting networking and participation throughout the full-day event.

The Green Chemistry Initiative’s Green Lab Program promotes safer, more sustainable, and environmentally responsible laboratory practices in higher education. Through education, outreach, and collaboration, the program encourages students, faculty, and researchers to incorporate green chemistry principles into laboratory activities and scientific research.

Industry and academic sponsorships will help GCI expand green laboratory education, promote responsible chemical use and waste reduction, encourage resource efficiency, and provide students with opportunities to learn about sustainable laboratory practices.

The Green Chemistry Initiative (GCI) supports student engagement in research, innovation, and sustainable chemistry. Through research projects, research presentations, poster sessions, educational events, and opportunities to connect with the scientific community, students develop essential skills in scientific communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

Through industry sponsorship and academic partnerships, GCI aims to expand student access to research opportunities, laboratory resources, and hands-on learning experiences that connect green chemistry principles with scientific discovery and innovation.
