The Green Lab Program is in its early development phase, supported by the Georgia State University Sustainability Initiatives, to advance sustainable laboratory practices at GSU.

Big News – I am pleased to share that the Green Lab Certification process has officially kicked off in our laboratories with support from GSU Sustainability Initiatives. Stay tuned for more updates.(June 3, 2026)

The Green Lab Initiative is a core component of the Green Chemistry Initiative at Georgia State University, dedicated to promoting sustainable practices in teaching and research laboratories. Established to reduce waste and minimize the environmental impact of laboratory operations, the program focuses on improving safety, efficiency, and resource conservation across the Chemistry Department.

Our goal is to transform traditional laboratory practices by encouraging the adoption of greener alternatives, including minimizing hazardous chemical use, reducing solvent consumption, and implementing waste reduction strategies. The initiative also emphasizes energy and water conservation, proper chemical management, and safer experimental design.

A key feature of the Green Lab program is the development of a Green Lab Certification program, which recognizes laboratories that meet established sustainability criteria. Through this program, participating labs receive guidance, resources, and assessment tools to help them transition toward more sustainable operations.

In addition to certification, the initiative provides educational resources, training workshops, and hands-on support for students, faculty, and staff. By integrating green chemistry principles into everyday lab practices, we aim to cultivate a culture of responsibility, innovation, and environmental stewardship.

The Green Lab initiative reflects our commitment to making meaningful, practical changes—demonstrating that small improvements in laboratory practices can lead to significant environmental and societal impact.
